Garry's Mod Servers

Requirements

Resources/games

You'll need enough space on disk to have Garry's Mod installed + all of the games and additionally you'll need some free space for addons (about ~5GiB for Chill server, ~15GiB for West Metro server and about 23GiB for Metro server). Free space required varies depending on which map is loaded (for Chill server, for Metro server everything is downloaded since addons confusingly depend on each other)

⚠️ Be warned that Garry's Mod does not handle out-of-space conditions very well - if you run out of space while joining server it will corrupt some of the addons and refuse to redownload them, you'll end up with missing textures/models and potentially broken scripts!

• Garry's Mod itself (duh)
• Half-Life 2 Episode One and Episode Two installed since many maps use textures/models
• Counter-Strike: Source installed also because maps use its textures/modules
• Haven't tested it but installing HL2, L4D2 and Lost Coast might help with the missing modules/textures.
• TF2 is nice to have too

The optimal/preferred way is just buying games on steam and installing them. There are alternative ways but it's up to you to search for them and it will be your responsiblity to maintain them and fix any missing resources you encounter.

Also, you might need Half-Life 2 and Half-Life: Source for coop mode to work in these games if we ever actually try playing them. HLS Coop is broken, might need another serv just for that or just setup synergy instead.

Tweaks

YouTube/Media player: Switch Garry's Mod in steam to use x86-64 beta and apply this patch to make Media Player and Cinema Mode work.

VR: You'll need to install native module from here to make VR work. Note that VR is even more jank that base game. Last time I tested it only worked properly on windows.

MIDI: one addon has support for actual MIDI hardware (i.e. piano), but you'll need native module for that. No builds for linux but source is awailable and last time I tried it worked when I compiled it myself

You don't need to do anything else. All of the required addons will be automatically downloaded when joing a server. Servers have theri own collections but you don't need to subscribe to them. Everything should work out of the box. Let me know (link pending) it doesn't

Servers:

All servers have same password:

Either find the server in serverlist and it will prompt you for password OR type password <password from image above>; connect <address and port of server>

All servers let you change map used - use command !mapvote
